Driving Renewable Energy & Efficiency in India
The long-term strategy at Caterpillar India Private Limited in Thiruvallur, India, includes embedding sustainability in manufacturing through renewable energy and energy conservation. One key piece of this strategy is the implementation of a solar microgrid.
Thiruvallur, located 13 degrees north of the equator, has on average more than 2,500 hours of sun in a year, making it an ideal location for leveraging solar energy. The Material Handling and Underground (MH&U) Division collaborated with our local Cat® dealer GMMCO to analyze the solar opportunity for the facility. Together, it was agreed to install a 285 kW Cat® microgrid on the rooftop of the production facility, eventually covering 4,500 square meters of roof space.
Power generated from this solar array is synchronized with the local grid power, prioritizing solar generation to meet the load requirement and balancing demand with the local utility grid and diesel generators. The facility has reduced peak load conditions during the summer, supporting the local Electricity Board.
Since startup, solar power represents
of total electricity consumed at the MH&U Thiruvallur facility. From this and other improvements, in total, the MH&U Thiruvallur facility has reduced GHG emissions
from 2015 to 2017.
To also reduce the load demand, the facility has conducted energy audits, identifying various energy efficiency opportunities and implementing resulting projects.
